Room To Unwind

Room To Unwind

How to create a home that helps you switch off… no redecorating required.

Room To Unwind

We put plenty of thought into creating spaces that help us work, cook and get things done. But what about a room that helps us do precisely the opposite?

“Our homes don't just reflect how we live – they shape how we feel,” says Author of Still: The Slow Home & Interior Stylist & Designer Natalie Walton. “By evening, we've spent the day responding to the demands of work, family and the outside world, so home becomes the place where we can finally exhale.”

The good news? Creating a calmer home doesn't require a new sofa, a paint chart or a weekend lost to DIY. Start with what your senses notice – the light, the things you can see and touch, what you can hear and, of course, what you can smell…

1. LOWER THE LIGHTS

The easiest switch you can make? The actual switch.

As daylight disappears, give the big light the evening off. Bright lighting encourages alertness, while softer, warmer light creates a natural cue that the pace of the day is changing.

“As daylight fades, switch off overhead lights and embrace table lamps, wall lights or candles instead,” says Wilson. “A softer, warmer glow can help create a calmer atmosphere and better support our natural circadian rhythms.”

TRY TONIGHT: Start lowering the lighting after dinner rather than waiting until bedtime. Light The Wind Down 1 Wick Candle and consider it your cue that the evening has officially begun.

2. CREATE A COSY CORNER

You don't need a perfectly tidy house to feel calmer in it.

Laundry happens. Recycling piles up. Children's toys have an uncanny ability to migrate into every room. Forget attempting an entire-home overhaul and choose one small space you can control.

Clear your bedside table or keep the kitchen counter where you make your morning coffee free from clutter.

Think about what greets you when you walk into a room: “Is it clutter? Or is there a beautiful welcoming visual 'moment' that reminds you that you are home – a lamp, fresh flowers, a favourite artwork or beautiful fragrance?”

3. ADD SOMETHING SOFT

Autumn is layering season – and that includes your home.

There's a reason we instinctively reach for blankets when the temperature drops. Texture makes a room physically inviting: wool, linen, cushions, rugs and throws all encourage us to get comfortable and stay awhile.

Wilson recommends swapping lighter summer textiles for warmer natural fibres, or simply adding a textural throw to the chair you naturally gravitate towards in the evening. No makeover – just one very good blanket.

4. FIND YOUR EVENING SOUNDTRACK

Silence isn't relaxing for everyone.

For some of us, switching off means peace and quiet. For others, it's music playing while dinner cooks, the radio in the background or a familiar podcast in the bath.

“There is no right or wrong answer,” says Wilson. “It's about creating a home that responds to your needs. Pay attention to what feels good for you.”

The important part is making it feel special. There's a difference between choosing something you enjoy listening to and having the television filling every silence simply because it’s there.

5. SCENT THE SHIFT

Make fragrance part of the transition from day to night.

Scent can change the atmosphere of a room almost instantly, which makes it one of the simplest ways to create a distinction between your daytime and evening space.

“Find a fragrance that feels personal to you, and helps remind you that it's time to slow down,” says Wilson.

Repetition matters, too. Lighting the same candle or switching on your Limited Edition Berry Blush Wellbeing Pod with The Wind Down Essential Oil Blend at a similar point each evening can turn fragrance into part of the ritual: work is finished, the lights are lower and the rest of the evening is yours.

For something that works quietly away in the background, place The Wind Down Reed Diffuser in the room where you spend most of your evening. Or light The Wind Down 1 Wick Candle when you're ready to make the shift from doing to simply being.

THE 5-MINUTE ROOM RESET

No decorating or decluttering – just five simple switches…

  • Turn off the overhead light.
  • Clear one surface.
  • Put your phone somewhere out of reach.
  • Add a blanket or cushion to your favourite spot.
  • Choose your evening scent.

Done. Now put your feet up.

TOP TIP: GO ANALOGUE

“Earlier this year, I bought an old-fashioned alarm clock for my bedside table – no digital screen, no light, just a simple clock face. Without having my phone within easy reach, it has encouraged me to start reading books again. I feel calmer in the evenings, more decompressed and less stimulated at bedtime.”
